I have two dachshunds. The young one, Snoopy, is rather dumb, so kinda dismiss just about everything he says. My older dog, Tina, is quite smart and has a good nose for rumors.
"psst...the Cubs want Mark Mulder...and a dog biscuit"
Tina told me that the Cubs are thinking about signing Mark Mulder.
Great. (please sense the sarcasm here)
The last year Mulder pitched without being injured or shitty was 2005.
He's made a total of 6 appearances over the last 3 years.
Honestly, if the Cubs wanted to sign him, they should probably just go out and dig Mark Prior up out of his grave and give him a shot a the roster.
Really, if the Cubs are so strapped for cash, it seems like a real stretch for them to risk any money at all on a player that has been injured for 3 straight seasons.
Why is this different than Ben Sheets? Ben Sheets has missed only one season, and most people are less scared away by the surgery that Sheets had than the multiple surgeries that Mulder has had.
Based on his throwing session the other day, Sheets looks like he isn't far from being ready for the MLB season. Mulder has yet to throw off a mound and it is likely that Mulder is basically on the same path as Mark Prior was when the Padres signed him a few years ago. He may never pitch again.
The Cubs have taken risks on injured pitchers before...Ryan Dempster...Wade Miller...etc...but nothing like the project that Mulder would be.
As far as the Cubs taking an interest in Mulder? Well, I have no doubt they have one of their 3 scouts out watching his progress, but I really think nothing will come of it.
Anyway, I'll let you know if my dog has more silly rumors to pass on.
