The 2008 Lineup vs. The 2010 Lineup. Difference? A few pounds, a couple years, and Jim Edmonds.

I saw this morning that the possibility exists that Jim Edmonds might come out of retirement and play for the Cardinals.

So I started reminiscing about the good old days when Jim Edmonds was on the Cubs in 2008.

Ahhh!!! What a great time it was to be a Cub fan.

Then I started to think about it...you know, the Cubs haven't changed much since then.

Let's look at the starting position players for the majority of the 2008 season.

Fukudome
Theriot
Lee
Ramirez
Soto
Soriano
Edmonds
DeRosa

You know, most of those guys are still here in 2010. Let's look at what we have this year.

Fukudome
Theriot
Lee
Remirez
Soto
Soriano
Byrd
Baker

I have already compared Byrd to DeRosa as far as statistics are concerned, so if you just consider those two to be the same player offensively, the only difference on the team this year is that we have Baker instead of Edmonds.

But you might think this bodes well...but I actually think this is a huge problem.

Edmonds are a left-handed power hitter...something the Cubs really needed in 2008 (and 2009).

The Cubs are ridiculously right handed.

Now I'm not saying that the Cubs should get Edmonds. But they do really need to consider getting a good left handed hitter. Not great...just good.

In this case, that one player could make a huge difference in the Cubs' lineup.

Of course, this is all assuming that lost pounds and a couple of years of age don't make any difference. :)
