Winter meetings: Most recent updates

12/7 2:52 pm
Cubs likely to offer Fontenot a new contract as I have expected.  But the Cubs will still need a utility infielder or an everyday 2nd baseman.  Thanks to Jerry Crasnick for the tweet.

12/7 2:01 pm
Heath Bell...Phil Rogers thinks that Soto or Theriot could be used in that trade and Bell would probably ask for $5 million in arbitration this year.  Do the Cubs have room for a salary like that?  Theriot is quite expendable at this point if the Cubs think Starlin Castro is the real deal.

Piniella says the Cubs are set with Marmol as closer.  Bell might be overkill if they are looking for a right handed reliever.

12/7 1:16 pm
Phil Rogers tweets that the Cubs are among the teaming intrested in All-Star closer Heath Bell, currently with the Padres.  What is Hendry's confidence in Carlos Marmol then??

Also, Cubs shoot down the Gil Meche rumors.

Bruce Levine of ESPN gives some details of what might occur with a possible Royals/Cubs salary swap...including Gil Meche...the other Ted Lilly.

The Cubs may bring back Reed Johnson in center field too...if all other options don't work out or cost too much.

All is quiet right now.  Mets are not willing to take Burrell.  If they are going to be involved in a trade for Bradley, it will be straight up for Luis Castillo.

Kansas City is a possible target for Bradley right now.

Pirates news from Jon Paul Morosi at Fox Sports:
Pirates starters Zach Duke and Paul Maholm are available, but one person familiar with the team's plans said Neal Huntington will need to be "overwhelmed" in order to trade one of them.
Another source said "a few" clubs have checked on Duke and Maholm recently.
Both are very affordable, which enhances their appeal: Maholm has $11 million left on his contract through 2011, and Duke will probably earn between $3 million and $4 million next year through salary arbitration.
Not sure who the Cubs could trade, but I do like both of those pitchers.

Mets officials are denying the rumor that anything is up with Burrell.  All signs point to the PhillyBurbs story as being made up, like the Saturday news.

More is surely to come!

Here are the most recent updates out of the winter meetings...

In Philly, the rumor that Pat Burrell has been traded to the Cubs, and the immediately moved to the Mets is currently sitting out there.

From PhillyBurbs.com:
The Tampa Bay Rays traded the slugging left fielder to the Chicago Cubs then the Cubs dealt Burrell to the Mets. Names of other players involved in the deals were not immediately available.
No other sources available right now.
