If you are like me, the idea of the Cubs moving their spring training site away from Mesa, Arizona seems impossible.
Over the last month both Mesa and Naples, Florida have made offers to the Cubs for a new spring training facility.
A majority of people were believing that the Naples inclusion in this process was more of a pawn to try to get more out of Mesa.
But tonight we learn that a group of Mesa officials will be making their way to Chicago to pitch for sites for a new Cubs spring training facility.
Two weeks ago, Crane Kenney and Tom Ricketts were in Naples listening to proposals from the city officials there.
While at the Cubs organizational meetings in November, the Cubs did meet with Mesa officials as well.
Now, I don't know at what level each of these trips were at, but if the Cubs went to Naples, and the Mesa Officials are coming to Chicago, it appears to me that Mesa might believe they could actually lose the team...something that seemed highly improbable just a few weeks ago.
A decision is supposedly going to be made in January.
It's kind of exciting this prospect of a major change for this team; a team that is so steeped in tradition that they can't even get rid of the stupid troughs in their bathrooms.
It will be telling to see if a similar trip is made by Naples officials, or if the Cubs' management makes another trip to one of these sites.
No matter what happens here, the Cubs are going to end up with a great deal, and this is one thing that I believe the Ricketts are handling masterfully. Most people don't want the Cubs to leave Arizona...but I'm on the fence about this. Sometimes, change is good.
