Here are the CDE picks for the Cubs all decade team.
Enjoy.
Catcher: Michael Barrett
runner up: none
I regret making this pick. But there just was no other choice. Joe Girardi's second stint with the Cubs was a short one, and unmemorable and was no better than Todd Hundley, Damien Miller and the list of 20 other crappy catchers from this decade.
First Base: Derrek Lee
runner up: none
Derrek Lee brought stability to first base which was lacking since Mark Grace retired.
Second Base: Todd Walker
runner up: Eric Young
Ugh...you know, the amount of turnover at a number of positions on this team is a little sickening. Second base is a prime example of that. And, no, Mark DeRosa doesn't belong on this list. Sorry ladies.
Third Base: Aramis Ramirez
runner up: none
Speaking of stability at a position, Ramirez brought that to third base for the first time since the early 70's.
Shortstop: Ricky Gutierrez
runner up: Ryan Theriot
I don't even want to talk about shortstop. Ugh.
Left Field: Moises Alou
runner up: Alfonso Soriano
This one was more difficult. I chose Alou because he was slightly better catching the ball that Soriano was. Alou produced and we got what we expected out of him. Soriano has not lived up to expectations.
Center Field: Corey Patterson
runner up: Kenny Lofton
This was almost as painful as Michael Barrett at catcher. Seriously, can you remember the last time the Cubs had a fixture out in center field? Neither can I.
Right Field: Sammy Sosa
runner up: none
I don't think there is any debate here...unless Maddog wants to come over and make some pathetic argument about Milton Bradley being better than Sosa.
Starters:
Kerry Wood
Kerry got healthy during the 2000 season...then was fairly consistent until 2004, when the injury bug caught up with him again. He resurrected he career as a closerpizza in 2008.
John Lieber
Won 20 games in 2001...then his arm died in 2002. Go figure.
Carlos Zambrano
He's been there through it all. He's started more games for the Cubs in the 2000's than any other pitcher.
Greg Maddux
He really didn't do much in his second stint with the Cubs...but he did win his 300th game. That's enough for me to put him on this list.
Matt Clement
I just liked the goatee.
Closer: Ryan Dempster
runner up: Joe Borowski
I just couldn't put on a single other closer on here. Hopefully I'll be glad to put Carlos Marmol in this slot for the 2010s list.
Setup man: Bobby Howry
He was actually pretty good, at least for a couple of years! Better than any other setup guy over multiple seasons. Bobby's biggest problem? Pitching more than one inning in a game. If you get over that, then he wasn't too bad.
Manager: Lou Piniella
Can there be any other choice? Don Baylor? No. Dusty Baker? No. Lou has had 3 winning seasons.
