Winter Meetings day 1 recap (and a farewell to Beaker)

A recap of the Winter Meetings Day 1:

Milton Bradley rumors reigned supreme yesterday, but very little concrete data actually came out. Teams that are likely still interested: Mets, Rangers, Rays, Royals.

Jason Stark of ESPN has made it seem like there could be a few more teams interested as well. I don't know who they would be...but if that's true, its better for the Cubs.

At this point, it would be apparent that no team has really wowed the Cubs as far as trade proposals for Bradley (surprise, surprise).  It looks like most interested teams are looking for the Cubs to eat almost 3/4 of the remaining money on the Bradley contract, which sucks.

In other news, very little was said about a center fielder. It's questionable if Curtis Granderson is actually available from the Tigers. If he is, the Cubs have said that they want to be involved.

Lou Piniella had a news conference yesterday. Nothing much was said outside of the fact the bullpen is too young and they need a center fielder. Piniella did dodge a question about him signing a contract extension past this season.  He's also hoping the team is healthier next year...aren't we all?

In news outside of the Winter meetings, Ryne Sandberg was named manager of the Iowa Cubs.

And our favorite redhead, Matt Murton, was released by the Colorado Rockies to pursue a career in Japan (as a geisha I'd imagine)...so good luck to you, Beaker.

And Murton in uniform:
