Paul Maholm contract details and analysis

Bruce Levine of ESPN has posted what the details are in the Paul Maholm deal.

It's a one year contract for $4.25 million.

The Cubs have an option for a second year at $6.5 million with a $500k buyout.

Overall, I think this is a pretty good deal.  Even though the Cubs are in full rebuilding mode, singing this free agent really doesn't affect anything.  The Cubs will need another starter if a trade for Garza occurs, so this makes sense.

This contract is probably far under the market value for Maholm.  If he puts up decent numbers this year, as a left handed starter, he'll probably have some value at the trade deadline.  My guess is that the Cubs, in the short term, fill out their rotation and will hope to get a prospect or two from this signing in a future trade.
