Thursday Potpourri: Mesa, Joe Nelson and iPhone apps

To start today, I just figured I'd report on some miscellaneous items...

First off, yesterday the Cubs made their official announcement selecting Mesa as the site of their new spring training facility.  A news conference/rally was held at the Arizona state capital where the announcement was officially made with Tom and Laura Ricketts in attendance.  The process is far from over, but after I saw the large amount of support the Cubs do have in Mesa, I'm fairly confident that this process will go through without too many problems.  The state legislature passed a resolution in support of the Cubs staying in Arizona.  The state still needs to approve funding, and the resolution needs to be passed by the voters of Mesa this fall.  Thank you, Mesa, for your support!

Watch the press conference here:

Second, Joe Nelson wants to pitch for the Cubs. Who is Joe Nelson? He's a journeyman relief pitcher who last year pitched for Tampa Bay. He has played in 5 different Major League seasons, starting in 2001. And in those 5 years, he has played for 5 different teams. Nelson had one good year, 2008, where he had a 2.00 ERA in 59 appearances. Over his career he is 7-2 with a 4.07 ERA in 149 appearances. Nelson is 35 years old.

Eh.

And finally, a little promotion. There is a iPhone/iPod app that I was directed to that has some cute little features developed by Discover Motion. The website is FanMisery.com and the application is call the FanMisery.com Index Project. There is a separate app for each team major sports team at the cost of $2.99. The app gives the current misery index for a fans of your team, statistics on how your team is doing (and how they relate to your misery), ability to give your opinion on how your team is doing and the latest team news from around the web. It's a nice app, and if you own an iPhone or iPod Touch, I suggest taking a look at it.

Go to FanMisery.com to find out more or go to the App store to buy it.

Happy Thursday.
