Aroldis Chapman goes from a communist country to a communist MLB team.

Aroldis Chapman, defector from Cuba and Cuban baseball star (not in that order) was signed today by the Cincinnati Reds.

This picture shows that Chapman should have no problem fitting into a Reds' uniform.

The contract is reportedly $25 to $30 million over 5 seasons.

For the Reds, they get a pitcher who needs a lot of polishing, but has a ton of potential.  For Chapman, he gets to meet up with renown arm destroyer, Dusty Baker.

If Chapman is everything he has been hyped to be, this is a good pickup for the Reds.  But, if he is like most of these unpolished defectors/players, he will likely not quite measure up.  I actually think, in the end, Chapman will be a very good relief pitcher in the Major Leagues.  But $5 to $6 million a season for a relief pitcher seems rather high. At 22 years old, though, he has the opportunity to be molded.  With the issues the Reds have with their rotation right now, it will be curious to see how quickly they rush Chapman up through their system.

Anyway, good luck, Dusty.  Have fun ruining your new toy!
